Legacy, Theories, and an Unsolved Cambridge Mystery

In this follow-up to Episode 102, we examine the life, work, and enduring legacy of Mary Joe Frug, the feminist legal scholar whose murder remains one of Cambridge's most haunting unsolved crimes.

On a spring evening in 1991, the 49-year-old professor was attacked and fatally stabbed just steps from her home near Harvard Square. The brutal killing stunned Cambridge, shook the academic world, and launched an investigation filled with questions that remain unanswered 35 years later. Her case shares similarities to another unsolved Cambridge murder case, that of Julie Campbell in February 1978. Julie was found stabbed multiple times and left bleeding between two snowbanks. Like Mary Joe, she was not robbed, her pocketbook was found unbothered at the scene.

In this episode, we explore the theories investigators pursued in the aftermath of the crime. Was Frug targeted because of her groundbreaking feminist scholarship? Was she the victim of a random act of violence? Did the killer have a personal motive? And what, if anything, was missed during the investigation?

More than 35 years later, the case remains unsolved, clouded by speculation, controversy, and silence. As we look back at both her life and her death, we examine how one extraordinary woman left a lasting mark on legal scholarship while the search for her killer continues.
